Setting new standards with Schlemmer: Singapore chooses Schlemmer as the supplier of cable cleats

The Asian city of Singapore is resolutely pressing ahead with the relocation of power lines below the ground. Today, around 86 per cent of the supply lines are already underground. In a large-scale project, high-current cables are to be relocated up to 60 metres below ground level. As a metropolis of superlatives (around 5.6 million inhabitants on only 719 km²), Singapore is setting new standards for an urban infrastructure of the future, which is to meet the ever-growing needs for energy and data flow in the long term. With this project, Singapore is playing a pioneering role in developing a sustainable and future-oriented infrastructure.

To address the increasing demands of the megacity, the Singapore Power tunnelling project was commissioned to provide a long term, sustainable, and secure solution that will enable the energy utility company SP Group to efficiently install and quickly replace underground cables. The construction of the cable tunnels started in 2013 and is scheduled to be completed in 2018 with the installation in the tunnels of the new transmission and distribution cable systems over the next 10 years. The Singapore tunnelling project is key to ensuring the reliability and security of the electricity network in Singapore and maintaining SP Group position as one of the of the best performing electricity networks in the world.

Schlemmer UK designed a range of cable cleats for the 400kV network NDC199 in line with the challenging SP Group specification and a 40 years design life which were tested in accordance with IEC61914:2015 to ensure resistance to short circuit forces. The Schlemmer design and engineering capability and local presence through the Schlemmer Singapore office were the drivers which enabled us to secure purchase orders from the three cable manufactures awarded the contracts by SP Group to install the cable systems.

“Schlemmer UK which is the business unit industry’s centre of competence for cable cleats has already been successful in winning contracts for the £14Billion Crossrail London Underground project in addition to the Doha Metro in Qatar. The orders from Singapore which is another milestone in the continued development of our Industry business unit as we leverage our experience and global network across this product range”, explains Josef Minster, CEO of the Schlemmer Group.

The Industry business unit contributed around 14 per cent to the total turnover of the Schlemmer Group and is set to continue to grow strongly in the coming years. Cable cleats have been an integral part of the Industry portfolio since 2015 and are used on electrical transmission and distribution networks, oil & gas and petrochemical, rail infrastructure, mining and construction applications.
