Media relations for new broadcast technologies

The Bavarian research project 5G TODAY created a 5G broadcast test field in the Bavarian Oberland region. Led by the Institut für Rundfunktechnik, project partners Kathrein and Rohde & Schwarz investigated large-scale TV transmission using the FeMBMS broadcast mode (Further evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service) in 5G. They were supported by associate partners Telefónica Deutschland and Bayerischer Rundfunk, which operated the 5G FeMBMS transmitter network as a test field at its own sites.

Two high-power high-tower transmitters from Rohde & Schwarz, each with 100 kW ERP, were installed at Bayerischer Rundfunk sites in Munich-Ismaning and on the Wendelstein mountain at 1,828 metres. Kathrein antennas were integrated and optimised specifically for mobile reception. The two test transmitters ran in a single frequency network (SFN) on channels 56/57 (750–760 MHz), with frequencies provided by Telefónica.

The IRT developed a FeMBMS receiver based on software-defined radio technology and contributed to transmitter network planning and field measurements. The 5G TODAY research project ran for 28 months and was funded by the Bavarian Research Foundation.

The findings from 5G TODAY make a substantial contribution towards 5G broadcasting. They feed into standardisation work and advance the development of components towards market readiness. The goal is for users to enjoy the benefits of both transmission modes — broadcast and unicast — fully and continuously on a single device.

WORDUP PR has a long track record with new media technologies, from the DAB digital radio standard to digital terrestrial television (DVB-T). The agency brings further experience of technically demanding communications from mandates such as SpaceNet AG.
